Play can be hard work and serious business. It’s time to push beyond the idea that play is “merely” leisure, to consider how methods, theories, histories, practices, and discourses shape our notions of play and playability.

Doctoral students at Rutgers University’s School of Communication and Information created the Extending Play conference series in 2012 to address these phenomena, and we’re hard at work planning the event’s third instalment for Autumn 2016. At Extending Play 2016, we aim to explore, understand, and facilitate discussion regarding play as a central practice in media and communication.

Dr. Irene Chien, assistant professor in Media & Communication presented a paper titled "The Digital Seriality of Candy Crush and Free-to-Play" at the Extending Play conference at Rutgers University on Saturday, October 1.
