Football Ranked Third in Preseason Poll

Wednesday, August 1, 2012

Shane O'Connor The Muhlenberg football team was ranked third in the Centennial Conference preseason poll, released today at the conference’s media day event.

The Mules totaled 126 points in the poll, including one first-place vote, based on the rankings put forth by coaches and sports information directors from the member schools of the CC.

Muhlenberg enters the 2012 season coming off of a 7-3 record in 2011 and a second-place finish in the CC. The Mules were picked to finish third in the 2011 preseason poll as well.

Three-time defending CC champion Johns Hopkins topped the preseason poll with 14 first-place votes. The Blue Jays have been preseason favorites for seven of the past nine years. Ursinus was ranked second, with four first-place votes, and Dickinson also nabbed a first-place vote despite its seventh-place ranking in the poll.

Muhlenberg enters this season with only two of its 11 defensive starters from last year’s team, including rover Shane O’Connor (left), one of the team’s captains. Despite this challenge, head coach Mike Donnelly remains optimistic that other players will learn to fill these defensive roles. Offensively, the Mules return seven of their 11 starters, including All-CC honorable mention running back Terrence Dandridge.

The Mules kick off the 2012 season one month from today on Saturday, September 1, at The Apprentice School in Newport News, Va. A win by the Mules would bring Donnelly to a total of 99 victories as he enters his 16th year of coaching at Muhlenberg.

The Mules’ first home game at Scotty Wood Stadium is scheduled for Saturday, September 8, against CC rival Franklin & Marshall.
