men's cross country Both Muhlenberg cross country teams appear in the first regional rankings of the 2013 season, released today by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The men are ninth in the Mideast Region, while the women are 10th.

The men are in the regional rankings for the first time since 2010, when they were ranked as high as ninth. In their lone meet to date, the Mules finished fourth at the Lehigh Invitational. The only Division III school to place higher was DeSales, which is ranked seventh in the region. Centennial Conference schools account for five of the 10 spots, with Haverford leading the way.

The women are in the rankings for the third straight season after back-to-back top-10 regional finishes the last two years. Like the men, they are one of five CC squads in the 10-team survey, with the top spot belonging to defending national champion Johns Hopkins. Muhlenberg was the top Division III school at the Lehigh Invitational.

After a two-week hiatus from competition, both Muhlenberg teams will return to action this Saturday in a meet at Cedar Crest, the closest to home the Mules will run this season.

Muhlenberg’s lone loss is to Rutgers-Camden, which is ranked first in the South Atlantic and sixth in Division III. The Mules are faced with a challenging schedule the rest of the way, as seven of their remaining 12 scheduled opponents are regionally and/or nationally ranked, beginning tomorrow night with a match at Drew (10th in the Mid-Atlantic).
