Weikert Award Two members of Muhlenberg’s Class of 2015, javelin thrower Tyler Bauer and softball pitcher Kelsey Jones, received the Sidney G. Weikert Sophomore Athlete of the Year Award for their performance during the 2012-13 academic year at halftime of Saturday’s Homecoming football game.

The annual award recognizes athletic achievement with accompanying campus contribution and strong academic record. It was established in 1973 by the Muhlenberg College Alumni Association in memory of the late Sidney G. Weikert, a loyal alumnus and former associate director of admissions at Muhlenberg.

Tyler Bauer Bauer was an All-American and an Academic All-American as a sophomore. He earned All-America honors by finishing fifth in the javelin at the NCAA Division III Championships. He also was named Most Outstanding Performer of the Centennial Conference Championships after winning his second straight javelin title by nearly 25 feet. A two-time CC athlete of the week, Bauer raised the school record in the javelin from 196-7 to 214-5 last year.

Kelsey Jones The second straight member of the softball team to win the award, Jones was the CC co-pitcher of the year in 2013, leading the Mules to a school-record 31 wins and the CC regular-season title. She finished 17-4 with a 2.51 ERA, including a 9-0 mark and a 1.42 ERA in CC regular-season games, and set school records for wins and innings pitched (150.1) in a season. Jones tied a school record with 20 complete games, including four shutouts – one of which was a perfect game (the first in program history) against Misericordia.
