Scotty Wood Tournament Preview

Tuesday, November 12, 2013 - page 3

A women’s team that was in the top 10 last year and a men’s team that went undefeated last year are among the visitors for the Scotty Wood Tournament, which tips off the Muhlenberg basketball season this Friday and Saturday.

Scotty Tournament logo The tournament, in its 32nd year, is named after the late Milton W. “Scotty” Wood, whose relationship with Muhlenberg basketball players at his restaurant in downtown Allentown in the 1940s led to his founding food service giant The Wood Company, now owned by Sodexo.

Both Mule teams will be looking to recapture the Scotty Wood titles they won in 2011 after falling in the championship games last year.

The Muhlenberg women (17-9 last year) open the tournament against Rowan, which lost 12 of its last 13 to finish the 2012-13 season with a 5-20 record. The other first-round game matches Misericordia (12-13) against a Catholic squad coming off a 27-2 season in which it was ranked as high as ninth in the poll and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Mule men (17-10) start up against Bryn Athyn, which was undefeated because it did not have a team last year. The tiny college in suburban Philadelphia is fielding basketball teams for the first time in 2013-14 and will present something of an unknown for Muhlenberg. In the other first-round game, Hunter (8-18) plays against Gwynedd Mercy (15-11), a 2013 Colonial States Athletic Conference semifinalist.
