2014 cross country captains The Muhlenberg cross country teams will have five captains – (pictured from left to right) seniors Josh Elkan, Luke Munyan and Cassiah Sahl and juniors Claire Thornton and Melanie Tramontina – in 2014.

Elkan shot out of the gates in 2013, finishing a season-best third amongst Mules at Lehigh and 31st overall. He followed up the strong season opener with a top-10 overall finish at the team’s home event, the Cedar Crest/Muhlenberg Invitational, crossing eighth.

Munyan was the Mule’s top runner in 2013, finishing first amongst his teammates in all but two races. Munyan took gold at the Cedar Crest/Muhlenberg Invitational and finished eighth out of 287 at the Gettysburg Invitational, helping the Mules finish fourth of 27 teams.

Sahl had the opportunity to study abroad last fall and did not compete with cross country in 2013. She did, however, show strong leadership last spring with the track and field team, and is set for a competitive senior campaign this fall. As a sophomore, Sahl finished a career-best seventh at the Falcon Classic, and ran in the top five for Muhlenberg in all but one meet.

Thornton had a strong season as a sophomore in 2013. At the Cedar Crest/Muhlenberg Invitational, she finished second amongst Mules and seventh overall, her top showing of the season. Thornton cracked the top 60 in two very competitive meets, the Gettysburg Invitational (48th) and the Centennial Conference Championships (57th). She also crossed third on the team at the NCAA Mideast Regional.

Making great strides from her freshman year, Tramontina emerged as the second-leading runner for Muhlenberg in 2013. Her best showing was at Gettysburg, where she paced the team with a 19th-place finish. Tramontina would cross second for the Mules at Lehigh (21st overall) as well as at the CC Championships (27th) and the NCAA Mideast Regional (52). Her showing at the CC Championships was an 18-place improvement from her freshman campaign.

The teams will look to start the season strong on August 29 for the Lehigh Invitational before co-hosting the Cedar Crest/Muhlenberg Invitational on September 13.
