softball to play in ncaas at Ithaca
The Muhlenberg softball team will head to Ithaca College for the first rounds of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The Mules (25-15) are seeded eighth and will play top-seeded
Messiah (35-5) in a first-round game scheduled for Thursday, May 12, at 10:00. The winner of that game will advance to play the winner of the game between fourth-seeded Western Connecticut (28-12-1) and fifth-seeded St. John Fisher (27-12) on Friday at 2:30, while the losers play Friday at 10:00 in an elimination game.
No. 2 Ithaca (27-12), No. 3 Middlebury (29-6), No. 6 Keuka (20-3-1) and No. 7 Centenary (29-11) are in the bottom half of the bracket of the double-elimination tournament.
Muhlenberg and Messiah both won their conference tournaments – Centennial Conference and Commonwealth Conference, respectively – without dropping a game.
The Mules are making their ninth appearance in the NCAA Tournament and second in the last three years. Muhlenberg is 10-16 in its previous NCAA Tournament games, going 2-2 five times and 0-2 three times.
The Falcons, ranked 13th in Division III, are making their third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. Messiah won the 2009 national championship and has advanced to the Division III Women’s College World Series three times.
Muhlenberg and Messiah both played at Ramapo during the first rounds of the 2009 NCAA Tournament, with the Falcons winning the regional. Messiah holds a 10-8 series lead against the Mules, including a sweep in the most recent matchup in 2008.
