Mayden to Run in 5K at National Meet

Monday, May 21, 2012

Samantha Mayden The top distance runner on the Muhlenberg women’s track and field team will have to travel quite the distance to run in her next race.

Junior Samantha Mayden was selected to run in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Division III Championships, which will be contested this weekend in Claremont, Calif. The women’s 5,000 is one of the last events of the three-day meet, slated for 5:30 Pacific time on Saturday.

Mayden qualified when she ran a 17:13.55, shattering the previous school record by more than seven seconds, at the Bucknell Distance Night on April 14. At the time, only four Division III runners had posted a better time, but as it turned out it was just good enough to make the field for the national meet. Mayden had the lowest qualifying time of the 22 runners selected.

Mayden is the seventh different member of the Mule women’s team to earn a spot in the NCAA Championships in outdoor track and field. Muhlenberg has sent a female to the national meet in seven of the last nine years and has been represented by either a male or a female every year but one since 2001.

This will be the second time on the national stage for Mayden, who also qualified for the Division III cross country meet in November. She is just the second Muhlenberg female to run in NCAAs in both cross country and outdoor track.
