Five to Captain Football Team

football captains The Muhlenberg football team recently announced its five captains, all seniors, for the 2012 season.

Dan Deighan (lower right) will be in second year as a captain. He has a 15-10 career record as starting quarterback and ranks eighth on the Mules’ all-time list with 3,539 career passing yards. Last season, Deighan also saw time at wide receiver, catching eight passes with two touchdowns.

Frank Malandruccolo (upper left) started all 10 games at right tackle in 2011 to earn his first varsity letter. He is one of two returning starters on an offensive line that paved the way for Muhlenberg to average 22.6 points and 313.9 yards per game – their highest in three years – last fall.

J.T. Merklinger (upper right) was the second-leading rusher for the Mules last year, gaining 379 yards for a team-best 4.5 yards per carry. He also was the team’s top receiver, catching 22 passes for 227 yards and a touchdown.

Merklinger’s backfield mate, Terrence Dandridge (center) will also serve as a captain. A two-time All-Centennial Conference selection, Dandridge is fourth on the all-time rushing list with 2,314 career yards, including a team-leading 741 with eight touchdowns last season.

The lone captain from the defense is Shane O’Connor (lower left), a two-year starter at rover. He was third on the team with 46 tackles (tops among returning players) last year. He also recorded three pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and an interception.

Muhlenberg was 7-3 overall, 7-2 in the CC last year. The Mules are scheduled to open their 2012 season at The Apprentice School in Newport News, Va., on Saturday, September 1.
