Men’s golf preview

Kelly Kline, Brittany Dzieciolowski
Junior Kelly Kline heads to third and sophomore Brittany Dzieciolowski to second on a ball hit to the fence by sophomore Taylor Trifiolis during an 11-0 win against Elizabethtown in the Mules’ third game of the season. Muhlenberg hit .358 as a team and averaged more than seven runs per game in Florida.
Whenever the Muhlenberg softball team finally takes the field again, it will be as a team getting recognition in the national Division III poll.

The Mules (7-1) received six votes in the third National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll of the season to land just outside the top 25. Muhlenberg’s only loss is a 2-1 setback to 10-1 Coe, which is ranked 14th. Among the teams the Mules defeated on their Spring Break trip to Florida were St. Benedict (11-2), Ohio Northern (7-5) and St. Vincent (7-3). They also posted a 7-2 victory against a 4-4 John Carroll squad whose only other losses are to Coe, St. Benedict and 15th-ranked Lebanon Valley.

This is the second straight year Muhlenberg has shown up in the NFCA poll. Last season, the Mules received votes after their 8-0 start en route to a record-setting 31-9-1 final record.

Muhlenberg is on the verge of another record, one it would probably not care to set. The Mules have been idle for 13 days since their last game on March 5, with three doubleheaders postponed due to unsuitable field conditions. Since the team began taking a Spring Break trip to Florida in 1998, its longest wait was 16 days, from March 4 to March 20 after that first trip. The only time the “record” was approached since was in 2007, when the team went 15 days between games.

The Mules have home doubleheaders against New Jersey (Thursday) and Gettysburg (Saturday) scheduled this week.
