Thursday, May 29, 2014

Recent Muhlenberg graduate Nicki Cronin and rising senior Tyler Bauer were named to the Capital One NCAA Division III Academic All-District 4 Track & Field Cross Country team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Nicki Cronin District 4 consists of all NCAA colleges and universities in Pennsylvania. To be nominated for the team, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average and a starter or significant reserve on his or her team.

Both will advance to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration.

Cronin, who graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a physics major and double minor in Spanish and mathematics 11 days ago, was a three-time all-region runner in cross country. She qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2013 and placed 135th, the third-highest finish ever by a member of the Mule women’s team. During the season she also won the Cedar Crest/Muhlenberg Invitational and placed fifth at the Lehigh Invitational, a meet with mostly Division I runners.

Tyler Bauer Cronin (left) also competed in the NCAA Championships in track and field, placing 10th indoors with the distance medley relay squad at the 2013 national meet. She contributed to school records in indoor 4x800 and DMR and was a 13-time placewinner at Centennial Conference track meets, with one gold, two silvers and three bronzes. Cronin ranks in the top 10 on the Mules’ all-time performance list in events ranging from the 800 to the 5,000.

Bauer (right) made the Academic All-District team for the second straight year. Last year, he was a second-team Academic All-Ametrican.

A double major in biology and music (music performance concentration), Bauer earned All-America honors for the second straight year by placing sixth in the javelin at the NCAA Championships last weekend. He is only the second member of the Muhlenberg track and field program to earn All-America honors in more than one year.

The three-time CC javelin champion holds the CC championship record of 209-3 and the school record of 214-5. Bauer was named Most Outstanding Performer of the CC meet for field events in 2013 and shared the CC scholar-athlete of the year award for the 2014 outdoor season.

The Mule cross country and track and field programs have placed at least one member on the Academic All-District team every year but one since 2005. They have combined for a total of 20 selections in the last 14 years.
