Tuesday, January 3, 2012

women's basketball New for the new year: The Muhlenberg women’s basketball team is ranked in the top 10.

The Mules, who have been idle since December 17, nevertheless moved up from No. 11 to No. 10 in the first D3hoops.com poll of 2012. Muhlenberg also is at No. 11 in the first poll released by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association since play began this season. The Mules were 19th in the WBCA preseason poll.

This is the second time in three years that Muhlenberg has climbed into the top 10 by not playing. During the 2009-10 season, the Mules moved up from No. 13 to No. 11 after being idle for two weeks, then advanced another spot the next week without playing a game. They eventually topped out at No. 9.

The only other time the Mules appeared in the top 10 during the regular season was 2001-02, when they reached their all-time highest ranking of No. 8.

Two teams ahead of Muhlenberg lost since the last D3hoops.com poll. Wis.-Stevens Point lost to a Division II squad and dropped only from No. 7 to No. 9, while No. 8 Lebanon Valley fell to Richard Stockton and tumbled to No. 17.

Lebanon Valley went on to lose a second game last night, 48-41 to Franklin & Marshall – the only team other than Muhlenberg without a loss in Centennial Conference play. Another CC team, Johns Hopkins, received votes in the WBCA poll.

The Mules (9-0) are one of 14 remaining undefeated teams in Division III, and the number will decrease by at least one after two of the other 13, George Fox and Lewis & Clark, play each other tonight.

Muhlenberg returns to action with a home contest against Dickinson tomorrow night.
