Mules Teach Local Students About Sports, Wellness

Tuesday, January 31, 2012

Last Thursday afternoon, the Life Sports Center was abuzz with action, but it wasn’t the normal Mule practices, scrimmages or workouts.

Instead, around 50 elementary and middle school girls from the City of Allentown joined a group of Muhlenberg women’s athletes to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day.

Members of the Mules’ field hockey, volleyball, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, softball and basketball teams gave the girls a brief introduction to their sports and taught them some basic skills. Afterwards they sat in groups, enjoyed a snack and talked about college life and making healthy choices.

It was an opportunity for the athletes to connect with the community, and the girls got a chance to learn about the benefits of staying active while picking up some new sports.

“It’s always a good feeling to be able to help out,” said senior volleyball player Brooke McQueen, one of the event’s student organizers. “It’s a lot of fun to spend some time with the girls and show them the sports we love.

“It was a great day, and hopefully we were able to get them interested in playing sports.”
