Long Named to All-America Team

Saturday, December 21, 2013

Michael Long Junior tight end Michael Long of the Muhlenberg football team was named to the D3football.com All-America third team.

Long is the 13th Mule football player since 1999 to earn All-America honors. He follows Matt Johnson, a third-team selection in 2007, as the only All-American tight ends in program history. Long is the first Muhlenberg junior to be named to an All-America team on offense since 2002.

At least one Mule has been named to a postseason All-America team in 11 of the last 15 years.

Long caught 47 passes – the second-most ever by a Mule tight end – for 525 yards and four touchdowns in 2013. He was the second-leading receiver and a blocking tight end on a prolific Muhlenberg offense that averaged more than 34 points and 400 yards per game.

Also named to the All-Centennial Conference, All-South Region and All-ECAC South first teams, Long ranked eighth among Division III tight ends in receptions, and he set a CC record for tight ends with 11 catches in a 27-7 win at Juniata. His catches were important ones, too: Of Long’s 47 receptions, 32 went for first downs, including 13 on third down and one on fourth down.

Long, who will enter his senior season with 75 career catches, just 11 short the school record for tight ends, also was a big contributor on special teams. He returned a blocked field goal for a touchdown against McDaniel and blocked a field goal himself against Moravian.

The D3football.com All-America team was announced prior to last night’s Stagg Bowl, won by Wis.-Whitewater.
