Major in French and Francophone Studies:

To declare a major in French and Francophone Studies a student must have a grade point average of at least 2.00 in the first FRN language course they take at Muhlenberg.

Students in the French and Francophone Studies Major track complete nine course units starting with the FRN course in which they place. This must include a 300-level Topics in French and Francophone Studies and a minimum of two 300-level courses in French. They may take 300-level electives in English from a previously approved list of courses. Where applicable, they will have a discussion section in French and/or include readings and writing assignments in French.


Students in the French Language Major track complete nine course units, beginning with FRN 204 Intermediate French I. This must include a 300-level Topics in French and Francophone Studies and all 300-level courses, one of which may be in English from a previously approved list of courses.

All French and Francophone Studies majors (Studies and Language tracks) need to complete a Culminating Undergraduate Experience in one of the following three formats:

        FRN 490 - CUE: French Research Project Course unit(s)
        Special Topic: CUE Seminar
        Research project embedded in a 300-level course in the student’s final year of the major

Students must maintain at least a 2.00 grade point average in all courses required for the major.

Minor in French and Francophone Studies:

Students who minor in French and Francophone Studies complete six course units, starting with the FRN course in which they place. This must include a 300-level Topics in French and Francophone Studies course.

Students must maintain at least a 2.00 grade point average in all courses required for the minor.

Teacher Certification:

Students seeking certification in the teaching of French in Elementary or secondary schools must apply for admission to the program through their faculty advisor no later than the end of the sophomore year. They must maintain a grade point average of at least 3.00 in all courses attempted at the major at Muhlenberg and demonstrate fluent command of the spoken and written language. Students seeking Teacher Certification must complete the French Language Major track. French secondary certification candidates are required to complete FRN 330 Introduction to Francophone Studies.
