Women’s and Gender Studies
Explore how identity, culture, and history shape our world and imagine new possibilities for the future.
Why women’s and gender studies matters:
Women’s and gender studies invites students to examine how gender, sexuality, race, class, and other identities intersect to influence people’s lives and shape communities. Drawing on perspectives from many disciplines, the field explores the cultural, political, and historical forces that inform ideas about femininity, masculinity, and gender diversity in different contexts. Students consider a wide range of voices and experiences, engaging with theories and approaches that encourage thoughtful reflection and deeper understanding of our shared world.
How women’s and gender studies is taught at Muhlenberg:

The program combines a central core course with a range of electives that allow students to explore topics and themes most relevant to their interests. Coursework may address feminist theory, media representation, health and well-being, political systems, and global perspectives on gender and sexuality. Students develop the ability to analyze complex issues, think critically, and express ideas clearly — skills that are valuable in any career and graduate education.
Students can personalize their experience through internships, independent research, and community-engaged projects that connect classroom learning to real-world contexts. The program’s collaborative environment fosters dialogue and connection, while opportunities such as special topics courses and courses offered through the Lehigh Valley Association of Independent Colleges (LVAIC) broaden students’ perspectives.
