SUNY College of Optometry

High school students committed to a career in optometry can apply for this cooperative program, which allows students to accelerate admission to the SUNY College of Optometry.

Students admitted to the SUNY College of Optometry 3-4 Combined Program spend three years at Muhlenberg and four years at the College of Optometry, graduating with a B.S. degree from Muhlenberg (after completing year one of optometry school) and a Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) from SUNY College of Optometry.

Program Requirements and Deadlines

High School Requirements

Successful applicants to this program must:

  • Have a total SAT score of at least 1360 with a math score of at least 700, or a 29 on the ACT

  • Generally rank in the top 10 percent of their high school class

Interviewing with a member of the Muhlenberg admissions team is strongly encouraged but not required for program consideration. Transfer students are not eligible for this program.

Requirements at Muhlenberg

Once matriculated to the college, students in this program must:

  • Pass the Optometry Admission Test with scores of at least 330 on all sections
  • Receive a positive recommendation from Muhlenberg’s Pre-Professional Committee for submission to SUNY College of Optometry
  • Meet at least once a year with a representative of the SUNY College of Optometry and make available undergraduate transcripts
  • Meet with the Admissions Committee at the SUNY College of Optometry during their last undergraduate year and demonstrate that they have satisfied all other regular admission requirements of the SUNY College of Optometry, including transcripts, an OptomCAS application, and a final interview during which good interpersonal and communication skills are evident

Deadlines

  • Completed first-year application to Muhlenberg College Office of Admissions before January 1 of senior year
  • Completed SUNY Joint Degree Program Application before January 1 of senior year (Please note, this supplement is submitted electronically directly to SUNY College of Optometry. Once submitted, please also send a copy to admissions@muhlenberg.edu.)
