Community-Engaged Courses
Muhlenberg forges connections with the Allentown and Lehigh Valley communities partly through courses that have students and faculty working alongside local partners.
Through community-engaged learning, you’ll discover the full potential of the Allentown and Lehigh Valley communities — places where you can connect with Muhlenberg’s neighbors, learn valuable skills, apply your knowledge, and make an impact. In all of these classes, you will connect course content with community work in ways that complement your education and address community goals.
Examples of Community-Engaged Courses
Local Sustainability
This course takes an integrated approach to analyzing sustainability at the local level. Students apply their understanding of globally important sustainability issues to locally relevant situations through a series of interactive field trips, reflective journaling, and community-engaged research.
Developmental Psychopathology
This course explores emotional, behavioral, developmental, and learning disorders in children and adolescents and emphasizes the interdependence of biological, psychological, and social/cultural factors in the etiology, course, and treatment of childhood disorders. As part of the class, students work within Allentown School District schools with children who have emotional, behavioral, developmental, and learning disorders.
Media Advocacy
This course introduces students to the strategic use of media to advance social and public health initiatives. Students participate in a community-engaged learning opportunity in partnership with a nonprofit organization in the Lehigh Valley.
Muhlenberg’s Inside-Out Program
Community-engaged courses offered through this program give Muhlenberg students and incarcerated students the opportunity to learn alongside one another in the Lehigh County Jail.
Community Engagement at Muhlenberg
Community-engaged courses are just one way that students connect to Allentown and the Lehigh Valley. The Office of Community Engagement stewards these relationships with local schools, nonprofit organizations, and other entities.
