Teaching Interests
I am interested in how performance makes visible the connections between things, how it builds and maintains community, and how it points us toward possible worlds that we might bring back across the line of representation to the real. I care about the social environments that we build (especially in our classrooms and rehearsal halls), and the natural environments we are just learning to steward. I teach directing, devising, performance studies, theatre theory and history, and a range of courses that address the environmental humanities, including study away and outdoor education classes.
Research, Scholarship or Creative/Artistic Interests
My research centers on ancient theatre, contemporary processes of collective creation, and the intersections between theatre and ecology. I write about tragedy, avant garde and immersive performance, ecological theatre, canonicity, and the intertwined histories of nature and culture; I curate conferences, most recently for Performance Studies international and the American Society for Theatre Research; and I make immersive performance with a variety of collaborators and small companies spread across the US.
