Teaching Interests
I am a media-making generalist teacher/practitioner, practicing across audio, video, filmmaking, web and graphic design.
In the classroom, I believe:
- learning the “how” (technical skills) is just as important as the “why” (your purpose and motivation)
- mistakes aren’t setbacks—they are a normal and necessary part of getting better
- kindness, respect, and empathy are crucial and that everyone should bring their own experiences to the classroom
- play and silliness spark better collaboration and creativity
- we should share our passions and geek out wherever possible, and I’ll be right there with you, geeking out too.
Research and Scholarship
My interests include:
- the DIY ethos in filmmaking — exploring how media makers craft their own equipment, rigs, and optical effects using everyday, readily-available, and cheap materials
- digital storytelling and oral histories — capturing the stories of the non-famous, yet uncommon lives of the community
- branding — building real, meaningful, human-centered visual identities, including elements such as typefaces, color palettes, logos, wordmarks, and language and visual guides
- video game studies — how the medium can be studied in the same ways as we study films (technically, theoretically, historically, and culturally), and how the interactivity of gaming makes it extremely unique as a media mode
