The Muhlenberg College Chapel

A Reconciling in Christ community since 1995, we welcome students of all identities into worship, community, and leadership.

What We Believe

The Muhlenberg College Chapel

We believe God made all creation and called it good, and therefore we welcome the belovedness of all people in the fullness of their identities at the intersections of race, gender, ability, and romantic and sexual orientation. But we also know we are a broken community. We seek wholeness together by faithfully engaging in challenging conversations that draw us to a fuller relationship with God and one another in the way of Jesus. We are committed to continually striving to be boldly anti-racist and both affirming and embracing of our LGBTQIA+ community in our ministry, our actions, and our relationships with others. We welcome all to join us in this journey of faith in the shadow of the cross and the promise of the empty tomb.

Every week during the academic year, our Chapel community gathers for Sunday evening worship rooted in the Christian liturgy of welcome, word, meal, and sending. Our time together is punctuated by prayer, scripture, preaching, music, and the weekly celebration of Holy Communion where all seeking to receive the grace of God in Jesus Christ are welcome. No matter what your Christian denomination or faith community background might be, all students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and community members, young and old, are welcome.

Our Sunday worship begins at 5 p.m. every Sunday the college is in session. Most Sundays we worship using a traditional liturgy that includes elements of both individual and communal contemplation and reflection. After worship each week, we transform the sanctuary to a dinner room and have casual fellowship over a meal. However, our general pattern deviates mostly on the third and/or fifth Sunday of the month when we host Dinner Church, a relaxed and interactive worship service that includes prayer, song, scripture, and story-telling around dinner tables in Egner Chapel. Regardless of the Sunday, we work together as a community to clean and reset the space to welcome our Roman Catholic Campus Ministry community for their weekly mass, which takes place at 8 p.m. throughout the academic year.

Egner Chapel is used throughout the academic year for many different events, but when it is not scheduled for use, community members are welcome to come for a quiet moment of prayer or contemplation. Throughout Lent, we gather for sung prayers and a simple soup supper on Wednesday evenings.

About the Chapel

Construction of the Gideon F. Egner Chapel began in October 1929, and the building was dedicated on January 1, 1931.

The chapel plays a major role in campus life. In addition to mass and weekly worship services, highlighted events such as Honors Convocation and Candlelight Carols are favorites among the community. Recitals, vocal performances, and choir concerts frequently take place in the chapel.

The chapel underwent an extensive renovation from 2011-2012 and now features a restored roof and interior masonry.
