Why accounting matters:

Accounting is more than spreadsheets — it’s how decisions get made, risks are managed, and strategies are built. Whether in corporate finance, nonprofit leadership, law, or entrepreneurship, accounting professionals help organizations stay grounded and informed.

How accounting is taught at Muhlenberg:

Accounting at Muhlenberg combines technical training with a liberal arts foundation. Students learn financial principles while building communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Hands-on projects, internships, and mentoring opportunities connect theory to practice, and students can tailor their coursework to meet CPA licensure goals or other career pathways. And critically, students graduate with enough credit hours to sit for the CPA exam right away — a key differentiator of Muhlenberg’s accounting program.

Our accounting curriculum is responsive to real-world changes in the field. Courses focus on broad accounting concepts and issues while also developing the teamwork, communication, technical, and interpersonal skills necessary to succeed professionally. You’ll be encouraged to enhance your leadership skills, develop high ethical standards, and achieve your full potential.

Part of our commitment to that includes ensuring that students who wish to pursue their CPA exam upon graduation have amassed the credit hours and other requirements necessary by any given state state board of accountancy. A faculty advisor will offer personalized support to ensure that you’re on the right track.

Students who have plans to pursue their CPA exam right after graduation, study abroad, or participate in other special programs are encouraged to enroll in Financial Accounting (ACT 101) during the spring semester of their first year at Muhlenberg.

Put your accounting knowledge to work in the real world.

At Muhlenberg, hands-on experience is an integral part of your accounting education. Through internships, mentoring, and immersive learning opportunities, you’ll build your professional network, explore potential career paths, and develop skills that set you apart.

Internships
Accounting majors have access to robust internship opportunities, with placements at:
Big Four accounting firms
Regional CPA firms and financial consultancies
Major corporations and local businesses
Internships are available during the summer or the academic year, typically in a student’s junior or senior year.

Mentoring Connections
Students can tap into a valuable network of alumni, regional professionals, and leaders from top accounting firms for one-on-one mentoring and career insight.

Global Business Experience
An international study abroad opportunity — designed specifically for accounting, business, economics, and finance students — takes place at the Center for European Studies at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. Courses focus on European business and economics, and students gain cultural exposure through travel and meetings with global leaders.

Public Service and Policy Insight
Through the Lutheran College Washington Semester program, students intern with government agencies or nonprofit organizations in D.C. while attending policy seminars and networking events. Participants live and work in the nation’s capital alongside peers from other Lutheran colleges.

Erica Borbi ’25

[Associate Professor Rackas] was really encouraging me to declare as an accounting major. She saw some potential in me that I didn't really necessarily see in myself.
