Why economics matters:

From climate policy and global trade to inequality and innovation, economics helps explain how societies allocate resources — and what happens when they don’t. Studying economics equips you to think analytically, weigh competing priorities, and understand the impacts of policy and markets on real people. Whether your interests lean quantitative, philosophical, political, or global, the field invites you to examine big questions and develop ideas that drive meaningful change.

How economics is taught at Muhlenberg:

At Muhlenberg, economics comes alive through faculty-guided research, dynamic classroom discussions, and career-connected projects. Our liberal arts setting allows you to pair economics with majors and minors across disciplines — from environmental studies to public health to finance — deepening your understanding and expanding your career options. You’ll graduate prepared for a range of professional opportunities or graduate study, supported by professors who challenge your thinking and champion your growth.

Curriculum

The economics major offers a comprehensive foundation in market systems, public policy, and global economic forces. Students gain strong analytical and quantitative skills as they explore topics like supply and demand, monetary policy, labor markets, and international trade. The flexible curriculum prepares students for graduate study in economics, business, or finance and for careers in a range of industries and public service. Economics pairs well with other fields of study and encourages students to think critically about the structures that shape our world.

Economics students are encouraged to put theory into practice through internships, study abroad, and faculty-mentored research. Many take part in Muhlenberg’s program at Maastricht University in the Netherlands, designed specifically for economics, business administration, accounting, and finance students. Internships — offered during the academic year or over the summer — help students explore career paths and build real-world skills. Qualified students may also apply to the departmental honors program or join Omicron Delta Epsilon, the international honor society in economics.
