English and Creative Writing

Why English and creative writing matters:

Writing and literature shape the way we think, feel, and act. They give voice to individual and collective experiences, preserve history, and spark imagination. Studying English and creative writing develops skills in critical analysis, empathy, and communication — abilities that are valuable in any profession and essential for engaged citizenship.

How English and creative writing is taught at Muhlenberg:

Curriculum

English and creative writing at Muhlenberg combines rigorous literary study with the practice of creative expression. You’ll take writing courses across genres — fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, drama, and screenwriting — alongside literature classes that span British, American, postcolonial, and global traditions. Many courses also explore underrepresented voices and new perspectives, fostering a broad understanding of literature’s role in society. Students develop clear, persuasive writing skills and the ability to analyze and interpret texts across mediums. Honors students complete a yearlong thesis project, guided by close faculty mentorship.

Your learning extends far beyond the classroom. Study abroad in Italy or Ireland through our Muhlenberg Integrative Learning Abroad (MILA) programs, where creative writing courses immerse you in new cultures. Work with visiting authors through our Living Writers course, join the editorial team of the student-run literary magazine Muses or The Muhlenberg Academic Review, tutor peers in the Writing Center, or collaborate with faculty on community-based writing projects. These experiences build both your portfolio and your professional skills.
