Film Studies
Learn to interpret and create meaningful visual stories.
Why film studies matters:
Film is one of the most influential art forms of the modern era — shaping culture, inspiring change, and connecting people across the globe. Understanding film means understanding not only how stories are told, but also how moving images influence the way we see the world.
How film studies is taught at Muhlenberg:
At Muhlenberg, you’ll join one of the largest liberal arts film and media programs in the country, where you can explore every facet of the art form — from the silent era to cutting-edge digital productions, from Hollywood to Bollywood, from documentary to the avant-garde. The film studies program offers a rigorous interdisciplinary education in both the theory and practice of filmmaking within the framework of a liberal arts degree. You’ll study the social, cultural, and commercial contexts of film while gaining hands-on experience in production. Courses span classic Hollywood cinema, documentary, independent and experimental film, and the rich traditions of world cinema. Production classes give every student the opportunity to learn essential technical and creative skills, with advanced work available in screenwriting, directing, acting, and video production. Both the film studies and production tracks culminate in a senior capstone course, ensuring you graduate with a polished project that reflects your skills and vision.
Film studies students have 24/7 access to dedicated production and post-production facilities, including a multimedia TV studio, editing labs, and industry-standard creative software. From your first semester, you’ll work hands-on with professional-quality cameras, lighting, and audio equipment to bring your ideas to life. You’ll collaborate with student actors from Muhlenberg’s nationally recognized theatre program, produce original content, and develop a portfolio through internships with major studios, media organizations, and independent filmmakers. Many students also study abroad at leading international film schools, such as FAMU in Prague, or take part in faculty-led programs in Dublin, blending global perspectives with practical experience.
Powerful Outcomes
A Muhlenberg education sets you up for success. The liberal arts will hone your ability to think critically, communicate, and problem-solve, skills that are in high demand across all employment sectors.
