International Studies
Understand the world to shape its future.
Why international studies matters:
Because today’s most pressing challenges cross borders, cultures, and disciplines, understanding the world in its full complexity has never been more essential. International studies equips you with the perspectives and analytical skills to navigate a deeply interconnected global landscape. You’ll explore the forces that drive cooperation and conflict, development and disparity, cultural exchange, and political change.
How international studies is taught at Muhlenberg:
At Muhlenberg, international studies is intentionally interdisciplinary, integrating the social sciences, arts, humanities, and natural sciences. You’ll learn to analyze global issues through multiple theoretical and methodological lenses, develop advanced research and communication skills, and gain proficiency in a second language — all while building a nuanced understanding of both other cultures and your own.

The international studies curriculum prepares students to think critically about complex global, regional, and national issues by combining courses across disciplines. You’ll examine historical and current events, policies, and trends through diverse perspectives while learning to apply research methods and analytical frameworks to real-world problems. Program goals include developing language proficiency at the intermediate level, interpreting cultural expressions in a global context, and cultivating the skills to communicate across cultures. This flexible, multidisciplinary foundation supports career paths in diplomacy, policy, advocacy, business, public health, law, and beyond, as well as graduate study in international studies and related fields.
In international studies, the world is your classroom. You’ll be encouraged to spend a semester or more abroad, immersing yourself in the languages, cultures, and day-to-day life of another country. Whether you’re studying development in Ghana, exploring environmental policy in Bhutan, or examining public health systems in Chile, these experiences bring your coursework to life in unforgettable ways.
