Why political economy and public policy matters:

The structures of government and the forces of the market are deeply intertwined, influencing everything from taxation and environmental regulation to trade policy and consumer protection. Understanding these interactions is essential for addressing society’s most pressing challenges. Political economy and public policy bridges the disciplines of economics and political science to explore how laws, institutions, and interest groups — ranging from labor unions to businesses and advocacy organizations — shape economic outcomes. This interdisciplinary perspective equips students to analyze complex policy issues with both the analytical rigor of economics and the contextual insight of political science.

How political economy and public policy is taught at Muhlenberg:

At Muhlenberg, the program offers small classes, faculty mentorship, and opportunities to connect theory with real-world practice. Students engage with economic models, political theory, and policy analysis while honing skills in research, critical thinking, and persuasive communication. The curriculum provides excellent preparation for careers in the public policy arena or for graduate study in economics, political science, public policy, or law.

The major combines coursework in economics and political science to provide a broad foundation for analyzing policy. Students study economic principles, markets, and quantitative methods alongside courses in political theory, governance, and policy-making. Electives allow students to tailor their studies toward specific areas such as environmental policy, trade, economic development, or regulatory affairs. The program emphasizes the integration of economic and political analysis to better understand how interest groups, institutions, and public opinion influence policy outcomes.

Students benefit from hands-on learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom. Internships with government agencies, nonprofit organizations, political campaigns, and policy research institutions offer direct engagement with the policymaking process. Study away programs, including the Lutheran College Washington Semester, provide immersive opportunities to explore policy and governance on both national and international stages. Many students also collaborate with faculty on independent research projects, applying their interdisciplinary training to topics that align with their professional aspirations.
