Financial Aid Options
Federal and State Aid
Students interested in financial assistance should begin by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) using Muhlenberg’s school code 003304.
Completing the FAFSA determines eligibility for:
- Federal Pell Grant
- Federal Direct Student Loans
- PHEAA Pennsylvania State Grant (for PA residents)
Summer Aid
Students enrolled at least half-time during summer may qualify for federal aid and the PHEAA Summer State Grant, pending academic progress and enrollment level.
Federal Direct Loans
These loans are available to students enrolled at least half-time and who have completed the FAFSA.
- Subsidized Loans: Need-based; the government pays interest while enrolled.
- Unsubsidized Loans: Not need-based; interest begins accruing at disbursement.
- Flexible Repayment: Payments on principal and interest may be deferred while enrolled at least half-time.
Annual and lifetime borrowing limits are set by the federal government and vary depending on your grade level and dependency status. Current limits and interest rates can always be found at studentaid.gov.
Private / Alternative Education Loans
Students who wish to pursue additional funding may apply for private education loans through a lender of their choice. Loan terms, credit requirements, and rates vary by lender.
Options can be compared through online platforms such as ELMSelect. All approved private loans require certification by Muhlenberg’s Financial Aid Office.
