Education Studies

Why studying education matters:

Education is a lens through which we understand social systems, equity, and human development. The Education Studies minor allows students to critically examine how learning happens, who has access to it, and how educational systems shape individuals and communities. This program is ideal for students interested in education policy, nonprofit work, public service, youth advocacy, or any field where teaching and learning are central.

How the education studies minor is taught at Muhlenberg:

At Muhlenberg, education is studied as a social and cultural force. This interdisciplinary minor emphasizes critical thinking, reflective practice, and real-world impact. Courses explore topics like the politics of schooling, inclusive education, and the psychology of learning. Students engage with current issues such as language access, special education, and equity in public education. With support from dedicated faculty, students tailor their pathway based on their interests and career goals.

Students in the education studies minor select from a range of foundational and advanced courses in education, many of which overlap with those in the certification pathways. Sample topics include:

  • History & Politics of American Education
  • Educational Psychology
  • Special Education
  • Multilingual Learners & Inclusive Classrooms
  • Curriculum & Assessment
  • Equity and Access in Education

The minor pairs well with majors in sociology, public health, psychology, media & communication, political science, and more.

Although the Education Studies minor does not include student teaching, students may still participate in fieldwork, research, community-based learning, or education-related internships. Faculty help students identify opportunities that align with their interests, such as working with youth organizations, tutoring, or assisting in local classrooms and after-school programs.
