Social worker Lauren Dennelly ’06 wrote a self-help book for adults who are dealing with the lasting effects of having to take on developmentally inappropriate roles as children.

“Why You Never Got to Be a Kid: How to Heal When Your Parents Didn’t Parent” is due to be released August 1 by New Harbinger Publications, which approached her about writing the book after reading her work on the website Psychology Today.

Dennelly, a psychology major with minors in English and women’s and gender studies at Muhlenberg, went on to earn a Ph.D. in social work.

“[Muhlenberg] gave me a really strong foundation in psychology. It’s a really excellent program.”

Reflecting on her time at Muhlenberg, she says, “It gave me a really strong foundation in psychology. It’s a really excellent program, and I have at least one professor I continue to stay in touch with after all these years. That foundational knowledge really came in handy when I was in graduate school and when I got out into the working world.”
