This summer, Aibrys Caminero ’29, a political science major and history minor from Washington Heights, Manhattan, has an internship with Access Justice Brooklyn (AJB), a legal services nonprofit.
Why did you decide to pursue this experience?
I wanted to pursue this experience with AJB because I wanted to see how public policy organizations make a difference in a community that is often overlooked. AJB provides the opportunity to give this community the legal support they need at no charge.
Muhlenberg’s community of openness has helped me learn to have a voice for those that might not be able to communicate their cases the best way and to actively listen to the deep problems that [clients] might be going through.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My day consists of speaking with potential clients and connecting them with our attorneys in the office as well as completing client intakes of different types of legal cases. I’ve worked [a variety of cases], from advanced life planning to consumer debt cases.
How have your Muhlenberg experiences helped you in this work?
Muhlenberg College has helped me in two major ways. The first is giving me the foundation to understanding how the legal system works and some insight on the framework of the legal case process. Muhlenberg also has helped with my communication skills. Muhlenberg’s community of openness has helped me learn to have a voice for those that might not be able to communicate their cases the best way and to actively listen to the deep problems that [clients] might be going through.
