This summer, Margaret Williams ’28, an accounting and media and communication double major from Clements, Maryland, is using skills from both areas of study at a summer job with a local pool business.
Why did you decide to pursue this experience?
I decided to pursue this role with a local pool company because I knew that the owner was trying to grow his business and needed help with managing Quickbooks and his social media accounts.
My experience as a double major in two different fields has helped me get a unique role where I use my experience from both disciplines.
What does a typical day look like for you?
A typical day starts with me arriving at the office around 7 a.m., where I’m assigned either office work or field work. If I am given office work, I usually either input and match invoices and payments or work on articles for the company’s website. If I am given field work, I will go to our worksites that day to check in on the progress made at these worksites and record the progress for our social media. I additionally have the chance to work from home, where I typically do my video editing.
How have your Muhlenberg experiences helped you in this work?
My experience as a double major in two different fields has helped me get a unique role where I use my experience from both disciplines, such as my experience from my communications classes aiding me in making videos and making inferences on how audiences will interact with the media. My accounting experiences help me with the bookkeeping I do for the company as well. In addition to my academic experience, my work-study experience with athletic communications has helped me understand social media better and working with technology such as cameras and inputting programs. The fast-paced environment of athletic communications has helped me develop skills such as adaptability and hands-on learning.
