Natalie Preble ’27, a physics and mathematics double major from Antrim, New Hampshire, was recently awarded a prestigious Rossing Physics Scholarship. She is one of only three students across 28 eligible institutions to receive the full $10,000 award.
The Thomas D. Rossing Fund for Physics Education makes available scholarships annually for exemplary students in physics. The awards are made possible through generous gifts from Rossing, who created the fund through the Foundation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Rossing was an accomplished physics scholar who decided to support the study of physics at colleges and universities related to the ELCA by providing scholarships in addition to other financial aid to exemplary physics students. He wanted to support students of academic excellence who majored in physics.

This summer, Preble is conducting research with Chair of Physics Adam Clark. Their research is about Lorentz-violating quantum field theories and the AdS/CFT correspondence, a graduate-level subject. It is Preble’s third summer conducting research on campus. This fall, she intends to apply to Ph.D. programs in physics.
“Receiving the Rossing Physics Scholarship is truly an honor and a testament to the incredible experiences I’ve had in the Muhlenberg physics department,” Preble says. “The curriculum has offered me a deep exploration of the subfields of physics with rigorous content and opportunities to apply these ideas to practical research. My professors challenge me and give me the space to explore the nuances of our universe. I’m immensely grateful for this scholarship and the continuation of my academic research in theoretical physics.”
