Why Italian studies matters:
In an increasingly interconnected world, the ability to communicate across cultures is an invaluable skill. Studying Italian offers more than just language proficiency — it provides insight into a culture that has shaped global art, politics, philosophy, music, and cuisine for centuries. This knowledge fosters cross-cultural understanding and strengthens your ability to navigate an international landscape, personally and professionally.

The Italian studies minor consists of six courses, beginning with core language study — Elementary Italian II, Intermediate Italian I and II, and Advanced Italian: The Power of Language (or approved equivalents). Students then choose two electives from Italian studies courses or approved related classes in subjects such as art history, history, literature, music, and more. Depending on language placement, some students may replace lower-level language courses with additional electives. This flexible structure allows you to tailor your studies to your interests while building linguistic proficiency and cultural depth.
While not required, studying abroad in Italy is strongly encouraged. Muhlenberg offers semester-long and summer programs in cities across the country, where you can immerse yourself in Italian language and culture while exploring art, history, and contemporary society firsthand. Students who study abroad may count up to two approved courses toward the minor and are encouraged to continue Italian language coursework upon returning to campus to deepen their skills and perspectives.

A Muhlenberg education sets you up for success. The liberal arts will hone your ability to think critically, communicate, and problem-solve, skills that are in high demand across all employment sectors.
