Summer Research

Summer Research

Discover the possibilities of spending the summer months immersed in scholarship or creative work, a transformative experience available to students across disciplines.

Muhlenberg has a robust summer research program that dates back to the 1950s, long before most small liberal arts colleges offered these opportunities. This program gives students the chance to dive deeply into a research question or creative project, devoting their full energy and attention to discovering or creating something new.

How is summer research funded?

Summer research grants are available. Students also receive one course-unit of research or independent study and campus housing. Funding is also available for research materials and travel to conferences, exhibits, or performances. Contact the Office of the Dean of Academic Life at deanofacademiclife@muhlenberg.edu or 484-664-3130 for detailed information.

Will I have an opportunity to present my project?

Yes! All students who pursue summer projects are invited to participate in the annual Celebration of Student Research, Scholarship, and Creative Work, an interdisciplinary poster fair that is held on campus during Alumni Weekend in the fall. This is a critical opportunity to share your work with fellow students, faculty, staff, and alumni, to practice your presentation skills, and to make new connections.

Students are also encouraged to submit their work to conferences, performance opportunities, and other venues where they might showcase their work. Travel funding is available for students interested in participating in these opportunities.
