Muhlenberg College has announced a new Bachelor of Arts degree in applied artificial intelligence, designed to meet the growing demand for professionals who can develop and apply artificial intelligence responsibly across a wide range of industries. Built for adult learners, the program is delivered in a fully online, cohort-based format and culminates in a hands-on capstone experience that integrates learning across the curriculum. Applications are now being accepted with classes beginning in fall 2026.
Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming how organizations operate, make decisions, and serve people. Muhlenberg’s new program blends technical foundations with critical thinking and ethical reasoning, preparing students to navigate the complexities of AI development and deployment in a responsible, human-centered manner.
“As artificial intelligence becomes more embedded in everyday life and work, we have an obligation to help learners understand both the promise of these tools and the responsibility that comes with using them,” said Muhlenberg College President Kathleen Harring, Ph.D. “This new program reflects Muhlenberg’s commitment to a rigorous education that prepares students to think critically, communicate clearly, and lead thoughtfully in a changing world.”
Students in the B.A. in applied artificial intelligence will build knowledge of core AI principles and applications while exploring the ethical, social, and cultural implications of emerging technologies. Graduates will be prepared for careers that require both technical proficiency and a nuanced understanding of AI’s impact on society.
“Our students want an education that is immediately relevant and that opens doors,” said Michael Miller, Ed.D., dean of graduate and continuing studies. “This program is designed for working adults who are ready to complete their degree while building practical skills in an in-demand field, supported by a fully online cohort experience and a curriculum that emphasizes real-world application.”
The program supports Muhlenberg College’s mission by developing intellectually agile, independent critical thinkers and preparing graduates for a wide range of positions within the computer and data-driven economy.
“AI is not just a technical shift, it is a societal shift,” said Provost Laura Furge, Ph.D. “This program helps learners build a strong foundation in applied artificial intelligence while also developing the judgment needed to ask better questions, evaluate impact, and use these technologies in ways that benefit people and communities.”
