Physical Science
Build a strong scientific foundation that opens doors to engineering, research, and innovation.
Why physical science matters:
Physical science examines the fundamental principles that govern the natural world, from the subatomic scale to the vastness of the cosmos. By integrating disciplines such as physics, chemistry, and astronomy, the field seeks to understand how matter and energy behave and interact, providing the foundation for countless technological advances. Physical scientists develop analytical reasoning, problem-solving, and quantitative skills that are essential to addressing some of society’s most pressing challenges — whether in sustainable energy, advanced materials, or space exploration.
How physical science is taught at Muhlenberg:
At Muhlenberg, the physical science major offers a broad, interdisciplinary education with the option to pursue the college’s distinctive engineering dual degree program with Columbia University. Small classes, close faculty mentorship, and access to advanced laboratory equipment ensure that students gain both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience. Whether you plan to move into engineering, graduate studies, high-tech industry, or another science-related path, you’ll graduate with both the technical expertise and the critical thinking skills valued by today’s employers.

The physical science major blends coursework in physics, chemistry, and astronomy to give students a well-rounded scientific background. Classes explore topics ranging from experimental nanomagnetism to theoretical string theory, ensuring a balance of practical and conceptual study. The program is designed to prepare students for advanced study in engineering or related sciences and pairs especially well with Muhlenberg’s engineering dual degree program with Columbia University. Students typically follow either a 3-2 or 4-2 structure, spending three or four years at Muhlenberg before transferring to Columbia for two years of engineering coursework. The curriculum emphasizes not only technical preparation but also the communication and problem-solving abilities nurtured in the liberal arts.
Hands-on exploration is central to the program. Students work with high-tech lab equipment, engage in guided experiments, and participate in independent research projects tailored to their interests, often collaborating closely with faculty mentors. Many majors take advantage of the engineering dual degree pathway, which combines Muhlenberg’s personalized academic environment with Columbia University’s specialized engineering training. Graduates leave prepared for roles in engineering, materials science, surface science, and other technology-driven fields — or to continue their education in graduate programs.
Powerful Outcomes
A Muhlenberg education sets you up for success. The liberal arts will hone your ability to think critically, communicate, and problem-solve, skills that are in high demand across all employment sectors.
