How Italian studies is taught at Muhlenberg:
At Muhlenberg, Italian studies is taught with a dynamic, interdisciplinary approach that blends language learning with exploration of Italy’s history, literature, cinema, theatre, and other cultural traditions.
You will learn Italian through a cost-free, custom-built program authored by Muhlenberg faculty specifically for our students. Small class sizes ensure individualized attention, and the program’s flexibility allows you to tailor your studies to your interests. Whether in the classroom, at Italian club events, or through immersive study abroad opportunities, you’ll gain both the linguistic skills and cultural fluency that distinguish Muhlenberg graduates in any field.

The Italian studies minor consists of six courses, beginning with core language study — Elementary Italian II, Intermediate Italian I and II, and Advanced Italian (or approved equivalents). Students then choose two electives from Italian studies (ITL) courses or approved related courses in subjects such as art history, history, literature, music, and more. Depending on language placement, some students may replace lower-level language courses with additional electives. This flexible structure allows you to tailor your studies to your interests while building linguistic proficiency and cultural depth.
Italian Studies at Muhlenberg offers students the chance to engage in original research and participate in international projects.
While not required, studying abroad in Italy is strongly encouraged. Our students attend semester-long and summer programs in cities across the country, where you can immerse yourself in Italian language and culture while exploring art, history, and contemporary society firsthand. Students who study abroad may count up to two approved courses toward the minor and are encouraged to continue Italian studies coursework upon returning to campus to deepen their skills and perspectives.
