The Coaching Program
In their first semester, each first-year student meets with a career coach in addition to a faculty advisor and a college life coach. The career coach helps first-year students develop their personalized Muhlenberg Action Plan (MAP), which guides students through the career development life cycle to create strategies and opportunities while honoring the uniqueness of each student’s goals.

At Muhlenberg, we recognize that building a successful career is heavily dependent on who you know. That’s why every Career Center event involves networking with alumni or employers. Our annual Connections Conference brings recruiters, hiring managers, and alumni to campus for a networking-focused event organized around “career communities” like arts and entertainment; business, accounting, finance, and entrepreneurship; STEM; and government, public policy, and law. In addition, programs like our road trips, industry job fairs, mock interviews, and the sophomore career accelerator all have alumni and employers present so that you can begin building your professional network organically and authentically.

This program connects students to one- to five-day excursions over winter break. During externships, current students shadow alumni, parents of Muhlenberg students, or other volunteers. The program goes beyond traditional job shadowing by emphasizing hands-on engagement and meaningful interaction. Students often participate in projects, attend meetings, and engage in discussions with professionals in the field. No student is too new to begin this type of career exploration — even undecided first-year students are encouraged to participate.

Muhlenberg’s curriculum includes an experiential learning requirement, and one way to fulfill it is through an internship. These experiences are important not only to the student — who gains professional skills and connections as well as a better understanding of the type of career they’d like to have — but also to potential employers. When considering candidates that are otherwise equally qualified, 97% of employers report that having an internship within their organization or in their industry were factors when deciding on who to hire.

During spring break, students can join the Career Center for fully-funded, overnight trips to visit employers in major cities. In 2025, students visited sites in New York City (including the set of ABC’s “The View” and Deloitte) and Washington, D.C. (including the National Nuclear Security Administration and the U.S. Senate). Alumni, some of whom went on these trips as students, serve as hosts — and valuable connections — for the next generation of Mules.

Muhlenberg’s Career Center is proud to support Mules of all ages through personalized, one-on-one career coaching. Current students and alumni with accounts can schedule these appointments through Handshake, our platform that houses jobs, internships, employer events, and Career Center events. Alumni without Handshake logins can contact [email protected] or 484-664-3170 to gain access and/or schedule a coaching appointment.
Resources for Employers
At Muhlenberg, we utilize Handshake to post internships and full-time jobs for students, recent graduates, and experienced alumni.
