Berg Senior Wins Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship

Muhlenberg College senior Rebecca Eckard has been named a Rotary Scholar through the Rotary Foundation's Ambassadorial Scholarships program.

Muhlenberg College senior Rebecca Eckard has been named a Rotary Scholar through the Rotary Foundation's Ambassadorial Scholarships program. This award, valued at $25,000 for one academic year, includes airfare, room and board, tuition fees, and a stipend for travel. Eckard will serve as a representative of the United States as she studies abroad in the location of her choice, which most likely will be the University of Sydney in Australia, after graduating from Muhlenberg.

Eckard hails from Willow Grove, Pa., where she applied to this program through her local rotary. A Dana Scholar at Muhlenberg, she is pursuing a self-directed inquiry track that focuses on creative arts and education/conflict resolution. She plans to concentrate her efforts abroad on theater as a form of conflict resolution. Dr. Peter Pettit, director of Muhlenberg's Institute for Jewish-Christian Understanding, served as Eckard's advisor through the application process for this prestigious award.

The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries. To date, more than 30,000 men and women from 100 nations have studied abroad through this the Rotary Foundation, which is the world's largest privately funded international scholarships program.
