Muhlenberg College will sponsor "Disabilities Awareness Week" the week of October 28. Commencing this week-long collaboration of education, awareness, and interaction is a lecture, "The Misconceptions Continue: How Media Represents People with Disabilities" by Henry Holden, Monday, October 28, at 8 p.m. in Miller Forum, Moyer Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Henry Holden, an actor, athlete, and stand-up comic, has been an advocate and spokesperson for the inclusion of persons with disabilities in the media and entertainment businesses for the past twenty years. He is the founder of Performers with Disabilities for the Screen Actors Guild, as well as an award-winning lecturer recognized for his powerful and enlightening message. Through his activism, Holden sheds light on the myths surrounding individuals with disabilities, in turn providing effective stratagems to change public perception and convert negative images into affirmative messages of tolerance.

This week of awareness continues with many other positive events, including a lecture by Julie Stoffer of MTV's "The Real World"-New Orleans, wheelchair basketball games, a lecture by Woodrow Wilson Visiting Scholar Barbara Gottschalk, ghost stories with sign language interpreter Gerald Fierst, a play "Educating Grover," and much more. Disabilities Awareness Week also places emphasis on "BUDDIE," an anagram for "Because You Don't Do It Everyday," with information sessions and simulation exercises focusing on topics such as mental health, learning disabilities, and visual and auditory disabilities.
