Gary Graffman, celebrated pianist, will perform at Muhlenberg College's Paul C. Empie Theatre, Friday, September 20, 8 p.m.

A native of New York, Graffman discovered his affinity for the piano at an early age and at seven was accepted into the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, where he is currently president and director. In this capacity, he advocates for gifted young musicians seeking careers in the performing arts. After sustaining an injury to his right hand in 1979, Graffman redirected his musical efforts and centered his performances solely on concertos written for the left hand. He has appeared with the New York Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, the San Francisco Symphony, and most recently has worked with the Saint Louis Symphony in Carnegie Hall and the Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra. Graffman has also made a series of recordings for Columbia and RCA, and has pursued a writing path with his memoir and many journal articles.

Graffman's performance will be the first of four recitals in Muhlenberg's 2002-2003 Piano Series. His concert will feature the works of Carl Reinecke, Max Reger, and J.S. Bach. Kemal Gekic will perform next in the concert series on October 25 at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $18 general admission, $12 for faculty and senior citizens. For more information, or to reserve tickets, contact the Department of Music at Muhlenberg College, 484-664-3363.
