Muhlenberg College will host the 2002 Governor's Academy for Urban Education, June 23-28. Supported by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and co-sponsored by the State System of Higher Education and Muhlenberg College, the academy will include over 200 teachers and administrators as well as approximately 50 teaching faculty.

The sessions are designed to increase the academic content of urban educators by focusing on the Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Mathematics and Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. Additional goals include strengthening partnerships and networks and having each participating team develop a Teaching and Learning Improvement Plan for the school year. There is an administrator strand, as well as programs dealing with daily issues confronting urban educators.

First priority for admittance to the Academy will be extended to teams of educators, which include a school administrator, from Pennsylvania's urban and empowerment districts; second priority will be extended to other teams of Pennsylvania educators.

Two graduate credits applicable to Act 48 requirements will be awarded to all who successfully satisfy all of the established program requirements. The instructional program, dormitory lodging, parking and meals are provided at a modest registration fee of $35 for educators who are accepted to attend the Academy. The registration fee will be refunded on Friday, June 28, to all educators who complete the Academy.

Stephen Pavlak of the Pennsylvania Academy for the Profession of Teaching and Learning and Linda Benedetto of the Office of Postsecondary and Higher Education in the Department of Education will provide leadership for the academy. Susan Byrne, supervisor of student teaching, and George Bonekemper, director of the Professional Development School, are coordinating the academy for Muhlenberg College. Additional information is available at 484-664-3529, and registration may be completed online at www.pa-academy.org/registration.
