Muhlenberg College will no longer recognize the Delta Tau Delta fraternity as part of the college community, following a hazing incident earlier this semester. The fraternity's national organization also pulled the charter recently, citing the same hazing violations.

"We continue to work with the Greek system to change the culture," said Muhlenberg College President Arthur R. Taylor. "We have succeeded on many fronts and we have other stellar examples of the Greek system thriving on campus. However, attempting to change the behavior of a small group of people within any organization can be difficult."

The action comes after a number of college violations, including those related to illegal hazing and the College's alcohol policy.

Delta Tau Delta was established as a substance free fraternity on the Muhlenberg campus in 1998. Muhlenberg College recognizes four other national fraternities and four national sororities. Recognition of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, for repeated violations, was withdrawn in 2000. The national organization also removed their charter in the summer of 2000.

Letters explaining the College's action have been sent to the current president of DTD and to the fraternity's national headquarters. Members of other fraternities and sororities on campus, as well as the entire student body, will also be informed of the College's action.

"We are a caring, diverse community and we stand for character. We cannot accept actions that conflict with our values and beliefs," says Taylor. "Our Greek system is a strong one. Members of our fraternities and sororities are campus leaders, heavily involved in community service, and valuable citizens of Allentown. This behavior was inconsistent with the culture of Muhlenberg College. This is an action against one fraternity, and in no way should it be construed as an indictment of our Greek system."
