Muhlenberg College has given 20 used computers to the Aspires mentoring program. Aspires, a program of the Lehigh County Conference of Churches, is affiliated with Communities in Schools (CIS) and the Allentown School District.

Four of the computers will replace unusable machines in the CIS computer lab for student use. The remaining 16 will be placed with individual students for home use. Most will go to Aspires students who currently maintain a relationship with a volunteer mentor, but have no computer in their home, to use for tutoring and computer skill-building with their mentors. Additionally, six students who are not currently being mentored but need computers for schoolwork will be selected to receive a computer for home use.

“Having a computer in the home will help our students keep pace with their peers and improve their keyboard ability, an important skill for employment,” says Gale Siess, project director for CIS. “Communities in Schools is very grateful for the gift of the computers, which are essential in this day and age for students to be prepared for the workplace.”

Currently, the Aspires program has 25 students. Seventeen are matched with personal mentors, with another four in the process of being finalized. Due to the recent expansion of Communities in Schools, there is a need for at least 20 more mentors for this year’s ninth-graders.
