Muhlenberg College students will present a check for $5000 to Heifer International on Wednesday, February 20, 7 p.m., in Miller Forum, Moyer Hall. Pamela Stone, a representative from Heifer, will accept the check and present the College with a framed award.

In September, the Muhlenberg College Center for Ethics and Leadership sponsored "Hunger in the Midst of Plenty: Causes and Solutions," a two-week intensive series of lectures, experiential learning opportunities, and social action events. Throughout the two-week period, faculty members across campus integrated the theme into course curricula, providing a unique, cross-disciplinary learning environment. Students learned about world hunger from a variety of perspectives and gained a greater depth and understanding of the issues surrounding word hunger. Inspired by the program, students raised over $5000 for the Heifer Project.

Heifer Project promises a needy family that it will provide a healthy animal, training and education in environmentally sensitive techniques. The family then promises to give their gift animal's first female offspring to another needy family and transmit the knowledge they have acquired. Jo Luck, President and CEO of Heifer Project International explains that each animal has the "potential of supplying a lifetime's food and income for a struggling family and every tree relieves environmental stress and aids sustainability." Muhlenberg students will donate a Gift Ark, including animals such as chicks, sheep, rabbits, beehives, guinea pigs, llamas, camels, donkeys, goats, oxen, cows, ducks, water buffalo and flocks of geese.

Heifer Project has helped more than four million families in need, providing more than 20 types of food and income-producing animals and intensive training in animal management, environmentally-sound farming and community development in more than 125 countries. The Heifer Project also provides opportunities for global education to the many individuals and groups whose generous gifts make its work possible.
