Diop And Weitz To Receive Honorary Degrees At Muhlenberg College Commencement

Muhlenberg College will award honorary degrees to Amadou Makhtar Diop, Ph.D., and Howard H. Weitz, M.D., at the College’s 155th Commencement ceremony, Sunday, May 18, at 2 p.m. on the College Green.

Muhlenberg College will award honorary degrees to Amadou Makhtar Diop, Ph.D., and Howard H. Weitz, M.D., at the College’s 155th Commencement ceremony, Sunday, May 18, at 2 p.m. on the College Green.

Amadou Makhtar Diop is the technical director for Global programs at the Rodale Institute in Kutztown, Pa., where he is responsible for overseeing the integrity of the Institute’s programs. With more than 25 years of experience in tropical and temperate agriculture, he has worked in the areas of international agriculture, hunger and poverty reduction, and sustainable food systems. Diop has worked for the West African Rice Development Association and led the Senegal Regenerative Agriculture Resource Center.

Internationally educated, he holds degrees from the Kuban Tropical and Subtropical Agricultural Institute in the former Soviet Union, the University of the Philippines and Oregon State University, where he earned his Ph.D. in crop science and crop/weed management. Diop is the author of 10 scientific books and articles, and in 2002 received a Certificate of Leadership from the Pennsylvania Food System Professions Education Project funded by the Kellogg Foundation, in recognition of his outstanding leadership, dedication and contributions to the Keystone 21 Project and food system education in Pennsylvania.

Howard H. Weitz, M.D., is director of clinical cardiology at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. Weitz is a 1974 graduate of Muhlenberg College and earned his M.D. degree in 1978 from Jefferson Medical College, where he completed his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in cardiology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

Weitz is certified by the Diplomat National Board of Medical Examiners and the Diplomat American Board of Internal Medicine, with a subspecialty certification in Cardiovascular Diseases. In 1993 he received the Intern House Staff Teaching Attending Award and, in 1988-89, was named Teacher of the Year by Jefferson Medical College’s department of medicine. Weitz is the author or co-author of numerous articles and publications.

Senator Arlen Specter will give the Commencement address. Kathryn Wolford, president of Lutheran World Relief, will speak during the Baccalaureate service at 10 a.m. Both will receive honorary degrees during the Commencement ceremony.
