The Muhlenberg College Institute for Jewish-Christian Understanding (IJCU) will sponsor a forum discussion on “Israel, the Palestinians and the Church,” Friday, March 21, 9:30-11:45 a.m., in Seegers Union 108-110. The forum is free and open to the public; no registration is required.

Participants will be the Rev. John Richter, senior pastor of Atonement Lutheran Church in Wyomissing, Pa., and Rabbit Ophir Yarden, educational director of the Interreligious Coordinating Council in Israel. Dr. Frank Sherman, associate for Lutheran-Jewish Relations for the Evangelical Church in America, will serve as moderator.

This event will offer the opportunity to hear Richter’s perceptions and responses to his recent visit to the seven congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan (ELCJ), as well as to benefit from Yarden’s long years of experience as an educator among Israelis and for Christians visiting Israel. Their comments will focus on the situation of Christians in Israel and among the Palestinians, the place of the local church in the Middle East as a mediator and force for peace, and the role of the wider church, especially in North America, as an advocate for understanding and peace.

Limited seating is also available for a brown-bag luncheon seminar with Rabbi Yarden and faculty members of Muhlenberg College, at 12 noon on March 21. Rabbi Yarden will discuss current challenges in Israel. Please contact the IJCU at 484-664-3470 for reservations for the luncheon.
