Radio commentator Jim Hightower will give the keynote address at Muhlenberg College’s second annual New Student Activist Conference, Saturday, April 5, 11:30 a.m., in the Recital Hall, Baker Center for the Arts. The conference is sponsored by the Public Engagement Project. Hightower’s address is free and open to the public.

An author, radio commentator and host, public speaker, best-selling political sparkplug and former Texas Agriculture Commissioner, keynote speaker Jim
Hightower has devoted over twenty years to his battle with both Washington and Wall Street on behalf of consumers, children, working families, environmentalists and small businesses. Hightower has recently authored a new book, “If The Gods Had Meant Us to Vote They Would Have Given Us Candidates,” and reveals his populist insights regarding Washington and Wall Street in his new action-oriented newsletter, “The Hightower Lowdown.” Jim Hightower conveys his messages through humorous and entertaining discussions of the “outsider viewpoint” that the “insider media” tends to ignore or trivialize.

After a successful first year, The New Student Activist Workshop returns as a stimulating aspect of Muhlenberg’s Public Engagement Project (PEP). The mission of this Project is to foster the skills, knowledge, and understanding that are crucial for successful citizen action in today’s diverse democratic society. The New Student Activist Workshop is devoted to sharing these new ideas on civic engagement, to encourage discussion of issues of diversity and unity, as well as to providing support for the “new student activists” on the Muhlenberg campus in the Lehigh Valley.
