Muhlenberg Board Of Associates Honors Students For Community Service

Six Muhlenberg College students were awarded the 2003 Muhlenberg College Board of Associates Community Service Awards at the Board’s spring dinner last week.

Six Muhlenberg College students were awarded the 2003 Muhlenberg College Board of Associates Community Service Awards at the Board’s spring dinner last week. The students were nominated by the College’s office of community services and selected by the Board of Associates. On average, each student devotes more than 20 hours per week to community service.

Danielle Ferreri ’04, a psychology major from Collegeville, Pa., coordinates fundraising for Muhlenberg’s Habitat for Humanity chapter and represented the College at this year’s annual training meeting. She is a member of Best Buddies and serves as an event planner for the group. This year, she organized the annual Shantytown fundraiser, designed to raise awareness about homelessness. Ferreri is completing the pre-medicine program and a minor in Spanish.

Alexander Joujan ’05 of Newbury, N.H., is a Muhlenberg Scholar majoring in mathematics, with minors in physics and religion. Joujan is a member of Students Have A Real Effect (SHARE) and coordinates the after-school program at The Caring Place in center city Allentown. He has established a tutoring program and organized daily math and spelling games, and planned a holiday dinner for Caring Place children and their families.

Amanda Kokie ’04, a communication major from Cranford, N.J., organized a Dance for the Cure in the fall of 2002. More than 500 Muhlenberg students participated, raising over $2,700 for area cancer organizations. For two years, Kokie has served as coordinator of the Jefferson Elementary School arts and crafts program; she and her team of volunteers spend one afternoon a week working on art projects with second graders. Kokie is a member of Alpha Phi Omega, a national service fraternity.

Lindsey Moore ’04 of Trappe, Pa., is a self-designed major in international health. A Dana Scholar, she is completing the pre-medicine program. Moore has been a reading tutor for three years and served as co-chair of a fundraising campaign for the Lost Boys of Sudan. She has served as president of SHARE and helped organize a panel discussion of issues surrounding immigration since September 11, 2001. This spring, Moore was named a finalist for a prestigious Truman Scholarship for public policy study.

Alison Pofsky ’04, a political science major from New City, N.Y., is the president of SHARE. She tutors at the Sixth Street Shelter in Allentown and coordinates a teen discussion group at Casa Guadalupe, an Allentown community center. A volunteer with Big Brothers-Big Sisters, Pofsky chairs the social action committee for Muhlenberg’s Hillel chapter. Her dedication to service and social justice earned her the 2003 Tzedek Exemplar of Excellence Student Award from Hillel International, the Foundation for Jewish Campus Life. Pofsky is completing the pre-law program and a minor in Spanish at Muhlenberg.

Jeff Slotterback ’04, an accounting major from Haddon Heights, N.J., coordinates semi-annual blood drives on campus. A member of the Jefferson-Muhlenberg Partnership leadership team, Slotterback helps to organize the annual Jefferson Field Day for over 700 students from Allentown’s Jefferson Elementary School. He co-chaired the fundraising campaign for the Lost Boys of Sudan, is involved with the Lutheran Student Movement and is a member of Alpha Phi Omega, a national service fraternity.

The Muhlenberg College Board of Associates is an organization of business, professional and civic leaders committed to fostering community understanding and support of Muhlenberg College. The organization meets periodically with College faculty and staff to be informed about the work of the College and to reflect community opinion and concerns. The Board has provided underwriting support for career development programs, sponsors a scholarship and provides financial support for a Lehigh Valley resident attending Muhlenberg and has sponsored programs of cultural interest to the College and the community.
